Obstinately strike

Migrants‘ strike on March the 1st became an object of discussion for the first time thanks to the courage of those women who launched the Facebook campaign. Then, migrant workers begun to speak about it in their working place, in their organized groups and coordinations and in their social places. Afterwards, many hurried up for giving lessons in order to change directions. Some of them said that this kind of strike would be a failure. Others accused that this kind of strike is an „ethnical“ strike. Others denounced that this kind of strike is impossible, in so far as precarity and illegal work are so many borders that cannot be crossed. However, there are some workers who obstinately, ignoring lessons and crossing the borders, are really organizing the strike.
Towards the 1st of March, the word strike is unifying not only a great solidarity movement for migrants, but also the workers, not only migrant. On March the 1st the strike can be done and will be done, and the workers who will abstain from work saying no to the Bossi-Fini law and the so called „pacchetto sicurezza“ (the new security law) will speak also for those who are precarious because their right to stay in this country is bounded to a labour contract. They will speak for those who never see a residence permit because of the illegality produced by the Bossi-Fini law and criminalized by the pacchetto sicurezza. They will speak also for those who are precarious and underpaid even though they are not migrants.
On February 6, in Brescia, 20.000 people, men and women of different generations, mainly migrants, demonstrated against the institutional racism cruelly enacted by the local governments. The word strike has been constantly amplified during the demonstration, and at the end the names of the 20 working places where the strike will be made on March the 1st were publicly declared.
On February 7 in Suzzara, near Mantua, dozens of migrant workers met to discuss the effects of the crisis in the age of the Bossi-Fini law. They found out the working places were the strike can be organized. At least three factories will strike on March the 1st.
On February 14 in Bologna more than a hundred workers participated to a assembly where some union delegates, both migrants and Italian, declared their support to the strike. We worked together into the working places in order to organized the strike and also in Bologna, in four factories, the workers will strike on March the 1st. In other cities, like Reggio Emilia and Parma, migrant and italian workers are going in the same direction. These are important processes and their force cannot be reduced to silence either by the government or by those who believe that, when migrants speak, the workers are divided. This process says clearly that to struggle with migrants is necessary in order to affirm the rights of all workers. Toward the 1st of March many mobilizations are being organized under the mark of the struggle against racism. We will sustain and contribute to the organization of all these initiatives.

However, the 1st of March will be first of all marked by the protagonism of migrants and of all those who will accept with migrants the risk of the freedom to strike saying no to exploitation and to the hierarchies imposed by the Bossi-Fini law. When the strike of migrant labour will be a reality, and not only a myth or an eternal promise, the difference experienced by migrants within their working places and in everyday life will be less hard.
On March the 1st we can move from words to facts.
